Check out this great advice from a fellow BBA student! Author: Hammad Rahman, Major: Finance, Economics Honors
It was recently brought to my attention that a shocking number of McCombs students don’t use LinkedIn, and if they do, not very effectively.
One of the easiest and most useful connections students can make on LinkedIn is with their professors. McCombs professors are great resources, and should be used as such, as they are usually extremely well-connected in the industry.
I am personally interested in the consulting industry and one of the professors that I had connected with earlier in the semester was connected with an industry professional in a top 4 management consulting firm. I messaged this contact of a contact (known as a 2nd contact in LinkedIn lingo), and he agreed to a 30 minute informational interview about his company and the general management consulting industry. Easy as that!
I really hope that you will read this and start using LinkedIn like the amazing resource that it is. Connect with your professors, recruiters from company Meet & Greets, and anyone else that could possibly help you later on in your career.
Final tip: When you try to connect with someone through LinkedIn, especially a recruiter, don’t use the LinkedIn-generated message. Type one up and make it personalized, it goes a long way.
