The Deloitte Consulting Undergraduate Case Competition is held annually each spring at McCombs for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The competition provides an opportunity for students to sharpen their analytical and professional communication skills, meet members of the firm from all levels, and learn more about the structure and opportunities available at Deloitte Consulting LLP.

I competed in the 2012 event as a junior and was immediately impressed with the depth and level of challenge the case materials presented. I had a great learning experience in thinking of solutions to two different cases throughout the competition with my teammates and I made new friendships and connections within my cohorts at McCombs as well as with professionals at Deloitte.

Perhaps the highest benefit of participating in the Deloitte Case Competition is having the opportunity to experience one of the most important functions of consultants in the working world. After my internship with Deloitte Technology Consulting, I reflected on my past experiences in college, and the presentation skills I had honed in case competitions helped me tremendously in crucial situations with clients, managers, and partners. The journey of the competition itself is also truly valuable, as you learn to adapt and leverage the dynamics of your peers in a small team setting. Finally, exposure to Deloitte professionals is an incredible resource for those who are interested in Deloitte Consulting and would like to learn more about the firm.

My team progressed to the final rounds of the competition. I participated in multiple case competitions before Deloitte’s, and I felt that the professional feedback given after each presentation was the most relevant, constructive, and applicable of all the events I attended. Outside of large-scale networking events, the case competition was my first real impression of the quality of people at Deloitte, and what eventually led me to intern and join full-time at the firm in the Technology Practice.

I fully recommend participating in the case competition. Don’t be shy in asking peers and friends to make teams. Discovering more about your teammates, adapting to work together, and bringing out each other’s strengths is part of the learning process that can’t be replicated in a classroom. Deloitte has opportunities for students in any year of academic study.
