Current Position at JCPenney: Buyer, Juniors Apparel
Why JCPenney: After working with several retailers, I joined JCPenney in November 2007. The corporate culture is one of team work and collaboration, which I love! In a very dynamic industry, you are able to get great exposure to all aspects of the business, including design, product development and sourcing. My experience at JCPenney has made me a well-rounded merchant, and given me experience unmatched in the retail environment.
Career Advice/Words of Wisdom: Definitely do your research! Find out as much as you can about the company and the corporate culture. You spend a lot of time at work, so you want to be sure it’s an environment that’s enjoyable with lots of growth potential. Also, do not solely rely on the internet. Walk the store, walk the competition, and form a point of view. It is critical to show that you’re engaged and excited to learn about the opportunity. This can really set you apart in an interview. Remember, there are no wrong opinions! Interviewers always appreciate a fresh look at the business.
JCPenney Opportunities: Imagine learning from Planning and Merchandising teams who drive the success of a multi-million dollar business! JCPenney is offering current UT, Austin students and recent graduates an opportunity to do just that through internship and trainee programs in our home office located in Plano, Texas.
Students at the junior level interested in the world of merchandising, planning and allocation can partake in our summer 2014 Planning & Merchandising Internship. During the internship, individuals will gain a basic understanding of each phase of the merchandising process as our goal is to immerse them in all aspects of buying and planning and show them what it is like to be a part of the JCPenney team.
Those who have recently graduated, or are set to graduate by August 2014, can partake in our Assistant Buyer or Business Analyst Trainee programs. During these programs, individuals will take part in a fast-paced, 10-week training period which will consist of projects, activities and hands-on training to facilitate learning. They will have the opportunity to engage with senior leaders and other team members who will be mentoring and coaching them to success.
