Name: Claire Bellar
Graduation year: May 2014
Current Position at JCPenney:
Business Analyst Trainee within in Planning & Allocation division
What does a typically work day/week as a trainee look like?
Every day is different! Some days I am in classes with my fellow trainees learning JCPenney systems and processes. Some days I am doing on-the-job training and practicing allocations with my manager. Some days I am out in stores with my team, learning about the product and assessing the competition. And other days I am working on my case study and prepping for presentations. At the end of the day, my job is to get the right merchandise in the right stores.
What classes do you think were the most valuable in you getting this position?
My data mining class was one of the most valuable classes I took at UT. The class helped me learn how to not only look at data but how to really analyze it and make useful recommendations. My marketing capstone class was also extremely valuable when it came to the case interview at JCPenney. After completing a different case study every week, I was less nervous for the case interview.
What advice would you give others as they search for opportunities?
Apply for any job that interests you! You’ll never get the job if you don’t apply. Don’t be afraid to apply even if the job does not specifically call for your major, it could still be a great fit for you. Always remember that interviews aren’t just for the company to evaluate you. You should be evaluating them too—to find the best place for you. When it fits, you feel it!
JCPenney Opportunities: Imagine learning from Planning and Merchandising teams who drive the success of a multi-million dollar business! JCPenney is offering current UT, Austin students and recent graduates an opportunity to do just that through internship and trainee programs in our home office located in Plano, Texas.
Students at the junior level interested in the world of merchandising, planning and allocation can partake in our summer 2015 Planning & Merchandising Internship. During the internship, individuals will gain a basic understanding of each phase of the merchandising process as our goal is to immerse them in all aspects of buying and planning and show them what it is like to be a part of the JCPenney team.
Those who have recently graduated, or are set to graduate by August 2015, can partake in our Assistant Buyer or Business Analyst Trainee programs. During these programs individuals will take part in a fast-paced 12-week training period which will consist of projects, activities and hands-on training to facilitate learning. They will have the opportunity to engage with senior leaders and other team members who will be mentoring and coaching them to success. Start dates for trainee programs are: February, June and August of 2015.
**JCPenney representatives will be attending the Career Expo on September 10th and will also be holding on campus interviews on September 11th. Make sure to stop by our booth and apply to open opportunities on OCR!**
