Everyone needs a role model in life, whether it is for moral values or career aspirations and guidance. Mine was my brother, who is four years older than me, went to UT, graduated with a BBA in Finance, and went into consulting afterwards. I saw his lifestyle of traveling to different cities and helping companies strategically improve their businesses, and I knew that consulting was an industry I was very interested in. After a few years with one consulting firm, I bumped into a few college buddies and found myself at Alvarez & Marsal.
Alvarez & Marsal is an independent global consulting services firm that specializes in many areas, including (but not limited to) restructuring, private equity, tax advisory, global forensics, and my area, business consulting and performance improvement. As a midsize firm, we are able to tackle some of the toughest projects while also maintaining a strong yet friendly culture, both internally and externally. We value maintaining a good work-life balance that many consulting firms advertise but do not follow. Consulting also provides for a lot of flexibility in work location. I was able to transfer from Dallas to Houston with no problem.
The perks of working at a “smaller” consulting firm is that I am able to get more exposure to different projects and people, while also getting more responsibility and experience. Our culture is unique in that we stress the importance of having an entrepreneurial frame of mind. We are encouraged to lead and to start new projects, whether it is starting a new community service event, leading a group at a networking event, or developing project plans and materials. Just last year, a co-worker and I started a battle of the levels golf tournament, where Analysts, Consultants, Managers, Directors, and Managing Directors compete to see who gets bragging rights (in golf, of course). During only two years here, I have traveled to four different cities (San Antonio, Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles) and have worked on various opportunities (M&A integration, Point-of-Sale and Back Office implementation, and Change Management). I have interacted and presented project materials to everyone from CEO to system administrator.
The combination of veteran and experienced leadership, competitive ambition, and company culture has put us in the Houston Chronicle and Dallas News as one of the Top 100 Places to Work and ranked us as #11 in Consulting Magazine’s Best Firms to Work for in 2013. Alvarez & Marsal is constantly searching for a team player with excellent analytical, problem solving, written and verbal communication skills. We value people who can adapt to different projects, different people, and different cities. The experience that I have gained here has been irreplaceable, and I’m looking forward to what else it has to offer.
So if you’re looking for a place that allows you to have fun, yet keeps you challenged and focused, Alvarez & Marsal may be right for you. Resume drop ends September 18, so get yours in today!
