Are you considering a career in management consulting, but aren’t sure what that really means for someone coming straight out of undergrad at McCombs? I remember having that same thought when I was trying to decide on what kind of career to pursue.  Having been in your shoes as an undergraduate many years ago, I offer a few answers to some questions I had when choosing a consulting firm.

What happens when I first start?
As a full-time analyst you will start by attending our immersion training course, Consulting Essentials, where you will learn core consulting skills like interviewing clients, gathering and analyzing data, creating effective presentations, presenting results and recommendations. You will then be placed “on-deck”, which means you are available to be staffed on a project.  Based on your degree and work experience you will be matched to projects by our staffing coordinator.

What is a typical project like?
Most projects are structured with a Project Manager and 3-5 team members of various levels from Analyst, Consultants, Managers and Directors depending on the size of the engagement. As a new analyst, you will likely be paired with an experienced team member who will assign your project tasks and will ultimately help mentor you as a new consultant.  You will be required to meet deadlines, handle multiple tasks concurrently, and be adaptable to new systems and tools.

What makes being an Analyst at Alvarez & Marsal Performance Improvement unique?
Analysts at our firm work side-by-side with experienced professionals on intimately-sized teams. That means they are learning from veterans of the industry at a fast-pace.  Also, because our teams are lean, everyone makes meaningful contributions and has the opportunity to interact closely with our clients.  This enables our Analysts to have an accelerated career progression when compared to their peers.  My experience with Analysts that we hire is that they are high-performing, self-motivated, and really good problem solvers.

As a McCombs student, you have a myriad of options when choosing a career. Performance Improvement at Alvarez & Marsal has offered me everything I was looking for.  If you are looking for a career in consulting with a great team, we want to hear from you.
