Please tell us about your career path and how you found your way to Aon.
I have had somewhat of an eclectic career path. As someone interested in marketing, I have served in various roles across different industries. I have served as a field marketing coordinator, worked in new business development in advertising, held a position as a project manager and worked in product development for a startup mobile tech company, and served as a marketing consultant intern for operations in an auto insurance company.
What do you like about working for Aon?
The culture for sure. I work around people who challenge me every day but also support me when I need the help. Additionally, Aon has so many great opportunities to pursue within the company. The flexibility to be able to move across the company is a real plus. Company-wide projects allow for me to not only expand my knowledge base, but also changes things up a bit, so there is always something new to work on.
The professional development you receive at Aon is fantastic. They really care about you here. You have both business leader mentors, and also colleague mentors to help guide you through your career path. Online training and on campus training courses allows me to really go beyond what I do every day and to get a new perspective.
We also balance work and fun here as well. I get to work on an engagement committee on my team and we have something going on every week whether it is a birthday celebration of a team lunch, or just tea time with a cube mate. It’s also nice to know that you can unwind when you need to here.
What does this job/internship entail?
To break it down, I am part of client delivery and what we do is manage oversight into our data analytics and how they impact our metrics that are defined in our client contracts. We are in touch with the client every day to update on our current state of work, but we also consult them on any process improvements that need to be implemented or any changes to the contract that need to be made.
So it is a lot of project management, analytics, and communication marketing (internal) that I work with on a daily basis.
What skills make a person successful in this position?
Communication and time management. In client delivery you will most likely be working on a lot of things at once. Since this is a project based role, you will need to know how to manage project schedules and how to meet deadlines you set up for multiple projects that are often going on at the same time.
Since you will often be speaking with both clients and internal colleagues, both in the office and virtually, it is important to understand how to communicate.
Please share your general career advice?
Don’t think too much about where your career is going to be in the next 5-10 years. Focus on the now and the opportunities that are presented to you. Have an open mind and learn as much as you can. In fact, never stop learning. There is so much wonder about the world, don’t stop being fascinated by new things, whether it is a new short cut in excel you just learned or about a new creature that was discovered in the ocean. Take all the wonderful things you learn in life and see how it impacts you, because you will never know how it will help you in the end. If anything, you will have a lot of great stories to tell!
