Financial Analyst – Meat & Deli Departments

Please tell us about your career path and how you found your way to HEB.

I started working for HEB right after graduating from McCombs.  I was lucky enough to be contacted by a Partner on the Planning & Analysis team at HEB about meeting on campus for an interview.  He had found my resume after going through the McCombs resume book and reached out to me to see if I would be interested in learning more about the company and his team.  HEB was the only company that reached out to me in this manner, which definitely set them apart from other companies I had interviewed with.

What do you like about working for HEB?

HEB just ranked #7 in Glassdoor’s Employee’s Choice Awards for the Best Places to Work across the U.S. and UK, so you know that the company is thought of highly by its Partners.  Several companies will mention that they have competitive pay and benefits, and while that is true with HEB, I’d rather touch on some other advantages HEB has.  HEB is headquartered and operates in Texas (as well as Mexico).  I was born and raised (and educated!) in Texas and loved the opportunity to start and grow with a company that will keep me close to the home I’ve known my whole life.  You also get to physically see the projects and analysis you work on when you visit stores or when doing your own personal shopping.  It gives you a completely new insight into a weekly routine you already have in place.

HEB gives Partners opportunities for training and development that can help them pursue several career path options.  HEB also has several sport teams you can join (soccer, softball, biking, etc.) as well as a handful of 5Ks and races you can participate in.

What does this job entail?

  • Financial reporting and analysis of weekly and period performance
  • Provide weekly sales and gross profit projections for departments
  • Annual budget preparation for the fiscal year
  • Build financial pro formas for new business opportunities within store to determine profitability

What skills make a person successful in this position?

In this position you need to have strong analytical skills, but also be a strong communicator.  Analysis is the first step, but if you are not able to easily communicate what you have found in your analysis with other Partners in the company, we won’t be able to quickly take action to benefit from any opportunities we have found.

Please share your general career advice?

Prepare well for interviews or any type of meeting with a potential employer.  Try to have an idea of what you are looking for in a career.  I know it’s tough to know 100% what you want your career to be, but it’s helpful if you have an idea to share with employers when the question comes up.  Use internship experience to help you answer this question.  Try out different industries and ask other student’s about their experiences.  This will help you in interviews as well as keep you from ending up in a job you don’t like.
