AttblogpicEnglishDialogue with Telecom Professional and McCombs International Business Alum: Aaron English, Chief of Staff at AT&T

Please tell us about your career path as a McCombs alum and how you found your way to AT&T:

I participated in a reciprocal exchange, study abroad program as an International Business student. I spent a semester in Oslo, Norway – living, studying, working. I experienced life through an international lens that provided an inspiration to work for a global company. My father worked for AT&T nearly 35 years before retiring so I was familiar with AT&T’s global footprint. I signed on with AT&T as an Inside Sales rep, and my career was born.

What do you like about working for AT&T?

AT&T is a company enamored with transformation and fixated on changing the landscape of the communications industry. Along with a rich history of being a “phone company”, AT&T is a global leader in mobile, broadband, and video content distribution. AT&T embodies an innovative culture that stimulates employee development, opportunity, and growth. Whether you’ve been here for 1 year or 30 years, there’s exciting growth potential for career development. My career has taken me through Sales, Operations, Network, and Support roles where I’ve been able to gain experience across a breadth of services.

Please share your general career advice:

Take advantage of McCombs’ reciprocal exchange student program. Reach out to those that have seized the opportunity and reaped the rewards of such a life-changing experience. Participation in the program can stimulate your future career.

Leverage your creativity and uniqueness. Remain relevant by re-inventing yourself so that complacency does not breed obsolescence. Be open to take on new roles that may not be comfortable. Growth isn’t solely about how deep you go. Rather, it’s about how wide you go.
