Please tell us about your career path as a McCombs alum and how you found your way into healthcare:
When I started my final semester at the University of Texas in the fall of 2008, like the Longhorns in the 4th quarter of the football game against Notre Dame a few weeks ago, things were not looking good. Global financial markets were collapsing, the Dow was on its way to losing 50% of its value and the unemployment rate was quickly rising towards levels not seen since the 1980’s. Not exactly the environment I had envisioned myself to be in going into my final McCombs interview season. As investment banking opportunities were slim, I began to look at industries outside of the normal finance sphere that would offer me the ability to grow professionally, utilize my analytical skill sets and provide me an ability to serve the community around me.
This led me to pursue a career in healthcare, an industry that was ripe for transformation and ultimately existed to help people. In the spring of 2014, after spending the first five years of my career working at the two largest healthcare delivery systems in Houston, Houston Methodist Hospital and Memorial Hermann Health System, I joined VillageMD. VillageMD had recently been co-founded by Tim Barry, Paul Martino and Dr. Clive Fields and was founded on the vision that data driven primary care physicians could transform healthcare delivery. VillageMD now serves close to 100 providers and 60,000 patients in the Houston area and is growing rapidly. VillageMD, now a national company, has gone through a successful series A round of funding and is now operational in three other markets outside of Texas — New Hampshire, Indiana and Illinois.
What makes VillageMD different?
VillageMD is helping to transform and improve healthcare by partnering with primary care providers who are who are passionate about helping others. We look for people who love solving problems with a data-driven approach, and a mindset that focuses on continuous improvement. We are a team that rewards people who are willing to take on new challenges and are focused on achieving results. We are a place where you can really make a difference in people’s lives every single day.
What advice do you have regarding a career in Finance?
The finance world is full of people who are proficient at modeling and analytics. What really separates strong performers from the pack is the ability to operationalize change and impact within an organization. The real players aren’t the ones keeping the score on the scoreboard, they are the ones that are on the field playing the game.
