Alight solutionsName: Merrill Hester
Major: International Relations and Global Studies – Class of 2016
Current Position: HR and Financial Solutions Delivery Analyst at Alight Solutions

Please tell us about your career path and how you found your way to Alight Solutions.

I started my career at Alight Solutions when I graduated from the University of Texas in 2016. Previous to my employment at Alight, I interned at SOLIC Capital, The Department of State, Citizens for Rauner and worked for Apple. During these internships, I gained a wide breadth of knowledge in finance, government, and technology. When I was evaluating companies where I wanted to start my career I knew that I wanted to be a part of an international company that could combine all of my previous experience. When it came down to a decision of where I wanted my career to go, I knew I wanted to work for a business that was able to utilize all of the skills that I had gained from school and work experience. Alight Solutions is a technology enabled services company that allows me to use these skills on a daily basis. I help to provide HR Services to international clients every single day and get to work with colleagues on a global scale as well. We have 22,000 colleagues in 14 global centers that service nearly 50% of the Fortune 500.

The best part of working for Alight Solutions is the people that I work with. From the beginning of my career, I was accepted and challenged to do things that most new hires don’t have the chance to get in their first year of working. The people at Alight Solutions go out of your way to make you feel welcomed and happy in the role that you serve at the company.

What is something unique that Alight Solutions offers?

There is an early career development program at Alight Solutions that all Business Delivery Specialists are involved in called Ignite. This program is a great place to network with the leaders of the company and meet new hires in the same position as you. This year long program enables you to grow with your fellow new hires and have a safe network of people going through the same trials and tribulations as you during your first year of work.

What does this job/internship entail?

A Business Delivery Specialist at Alight is responsible for collaborating with our clients, colleagues and vendors to best support our clients. As a member of the Alight Solutions team, you will perform daily tasks that will help support our Service Level Agreements and Operational Health. These duties may include: client projects, internal projects, project development, testing and deployment.

Please share your general career advice?

My best piece of advice to undergraduates and graduates of University of Texas is to be aware of your brand. Your brand starts here and will be with you for the rest of your career. Each day you should put your best foot forward and be conscious of how you are portraying yourself to others. Your brand is the most important bullet point on your resume. My other piece of advice for undergraduates is to really push themselves to diversify the types of internships you have during your time in college. Internships are a great way to see a snapshot of what you will be doing at this company/organization full time and give you a chance to see what you like and don’t like in a professional career. I had the opportunity to experience all different types of roles throughout my 4 years at the 40 acres and I was able to find the best industry to fit my skillset.

What does an ideal candidate look like for the Business Delivery Specialist position?

The ideal candidate will be analytical and have strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail, as well as being able to work under minimal supervision is necessary. Being willing and able to adapt to change is critical in this position, as there can be tight deadlines while managing multiple tasks.
