My career at Alight (formerly Aon Hewitt) began in the summer of 2012. I found a posting for an internship online through McCombs. After applying and making it through the interview process, I completed a 10 week internship in The Woodlands, TX office. Due to me voicing my interests in hobbies such as video editing, I was able to extend my internship through my Senior year at UT by working virtually part-time assisting with recruiting for Alight. After graduating in May of 2013, I joined Alight full-time as a Specialist working on invoicing financials. In 2014, I joined a different team within Alight that aligned with MIS where I would do configuration on an HR system called Workday, which is the same team where I am aligned today. In 2015, I was promoted to an Analyst. In 2018, I was promoted to Consultant. In 2019, I was promoted to Senior Consultant. In my role as a Senior Consultant, I am a People Manager of 6 colleagues, a Leader on the Location Leadership team, and Configuration Manager to one of our global clients.
One of my favorite things about working at Alight is the people that I get to work with day to day. I work with colleagues who are in the same office and who live around the country. It’s awesome having the opportunity to improve my communication skills when communicating with colleagues in different locations. Each person that I work with has their own expertise in an area of Workday so I’m constantly learning. Other things I love about working here are the work/life balance, learning something new every day, growth opportunities, and how no two days are the same.
On my team, we have the opportunity to become certified on Workday by going to a Workday location, such as Pleasanton, CA or Atlanta, GA and taking a 1-2 week training course on a specific functional area where we are tested at the completion of the training. I am certified on Human Capital Management, Absence, and Payroll. Passing the test is essential to doing my day to day job so it is cool to be able to measure my knowledge in this way. We also have travel opportunities when clients request our presence on-site at their location to meet and collaborate. I have been able to travel to Minnesota, Illinois, California, Ohio, and New York for client visits.
In my role, I am responsible for gathering requirements from our client, creating a solution in Workday that meets their needs, testing sufficiently, and configuring the solution in their Production environment. I work on a large variety of clients that have anywhere from 2,000 employees up to 50,000 employees. As a People Manager, I am responsible for guiding the career of the colleagues I manage. I aim to help provide them with as many resources as necessary to be successful and reach their highest potential.
To be successful on this team at Alight, someone must be self-sufficient, curious, resourceful, thorough, detailed, and passionate about learning. Learning something new every day is essential to gaining the tools necessary to do this job well. No question is a stupid question so we ask numerous questions to each other every day. We can all learn from one another so it’s great that someone can join the team, develop a niche in a functional area, and become a resource to other colleagues, no matter the years of experience.
